18thc.Virginia Cupboard, MESDA

Corner cupboard, circa 1775, attributed to Piedmont, Virginia. Primary wood- walnut, secondary- poplar. 82" tall. Stop-fluted colonettes, bottom has two paneled doors, upper doors are missing. Molded cornice, molded midrail, shaped shelves, stiles extend to form feet. Back is vertical butt-jointed boards with huge rosehead nails. Brass h-hinges are an old replacement. One 2" section of crown molding is an old replacement. The finish on this cupboard is stunning. This piece was examined by THE MUSEUM OF EARLY SOUTHERN DECORATIVE ARTS in August, 1977 and retains it's sticker. According to family history, it was purchased at auction in the 1920's.
